Is it just me? I just can't understand how people are so fanatical about sports. It's almost like a religion. People can spout out statistics like it's a verse from their bible. They know everything about their team or favorite player. People wear their team colors and jerseys with pride. But I guess that's what it means to be a fan. In reality I have nothing against fans of sports. I'm a fan of other things too so who am I to judge.
No, what I'm writing about is that maybe being a fan when it comes to Jesus isn't the way to go? We cheer him on when it comes to defeating sin and death. We marvel at his amazing debating skills and how he can put people in their place, especially those big bad Pharisees. We also know a few things about him, call them personal statistics: He's the Son of God, the second Person in the Trinity, He knew no sin, He had 12 disciples, He had authority, He was the son of Mary and Joseph, and so on.
But I don't think we're supposed to be fans when it comes to the Christian life. I think we're supposed to be players on the team and Jesus is our coach. Jesus already lived a perfect life and he modeled for us on how we should live, run, play, and win! Maybe it's time to resign being a fan of Jesus and become a true follower of Jesus? Maybe it's time to jump in and run the race that God called us to not just run, but win. After all, we all want the teams we cheer for to win. God has called us to live a victorious life and we're only going to win when we start to follow instead of "fanning"...I made up that word. So let's get in the game and become a player rather than a spectator.
