It's not a word that you hear too often. Anesthetic. But it's something that everyone uses. Here's what I mean. Most of the time we don't really think about how empty our lives are. Just imagine for a moment that you don't know Jesus. There is no salvation for you at the end of your life. All of a sudden you've got to numb the pain of the emptiness and fear that replaces the joy and peace of the Gospel. That's where 'anesthetic' comes in to distract and fill the emptiness of your hearts.
For some of you it might come in the form of video games, for others it's in the form of friends or romantic relationships...anything to distract you from the the emptiness in your soul. And we'll fight to keep our anesthetic. Don't take away my toys, don't take away my unholy relationship, don't take away my unholy friends because they distract and numb the pain of not knowing God intimately.
What's your anesthetic? What are you consistently fixed on to numb the pain of being bored? I'm not saying that the things of the world are evil, but is God the ultimate value in your life? Do you see coming to church, reading your Bible, or praying for other people as time well spent...fulfilling? I want to challenge you to see how you spend your free time. Maybe it's a Saturday or even Sunday after service and you have all your homework done. What do you do then? Think about it long enough and the anesthetics of your life will be exposed. What is numbing your pain, your loneliness, and your emptiness?
